The presenters will discuss that the trucking industry is now short more than 80,000 drivers needed to meet the economy's current freight demands. Diesel technicians are also in high demand and short supply. 
This webinar will discuss:

  • ATA can now provide its member-companies the ability to offer apprenticeships to job applicants;
  • How apprenticeships can help fill the workforce shortage gap;
  • How apprenticeships will enable motor carriers to better highlight the benefits of a career in trucking through the workforce development system nationally;
  • How apprenticeships can offer expanded outreach and training support, as well as expanded support services for prospective drivers; and

About the Presenters:

Chris Spear, President & CEO, American Trucking Associations

As president and CEO, Chris leads ATA’s efforts to advocate and educate on behalf of the trucking industry. Employing more than 7 million people and moving more than 10 billion tons of freight annually, trucking is the industry most responsible for moving America’s economy.

Prior to his time ATA, Chris worked in the transportation, energy, labor and technology sectors in over five different continents.  Most recently, Chris worked for Hyundai Motor Company, where he served as vice president of government affairs. In that role, he served on the Executive Committee for Global Automakers.  Previously, Chris was ATA senior vice president of legislative affairs and vice president of global government relations for Honeywell International.

Chris also has extensive experience in the federal government, serving as Deputy Representative for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Policy and as professional staff in the U.S. Senate.

Chris is on the board of directors for the American Transportation Research Institute, the Trucking Cares Foundation and the Louisa Swain Foundation.  He has been awarded the US Department of Defense Joint Civilian Service Medal and Honeywell’s Premier Achievement Award.

Chris holds a master's and bachelor's degree from the University of Wyoming.

 

Nick Geale, Vice President Workforce Policy, American Trucking Associations

Nick Geale currently serves as ATA’s Vice President for Workforce Policy. Prior to joining ATA, he served as a Senior Advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Transportation and Chief of Staff, Deputy and Acting Solicitor at the U.S. Department of Labor.

Before being appointed to US DOL, Mr. Geale was confirmed by the US Senate as a member of the National Mediation Board, overseeing labor issues in the railroad and airline industries and served as Chairman of the Board for part of his term.  Immediately prior to joining the National Mediation Board, Mr. Geale was an attorney on the US Senate HELP Committee for Ranking Members Lamar Alexander and Michael B. Enzi. Mr. Geale also served at the U.S. Department of Labor from 2006-2009, as an attorney in the Office of the Solicitor and as Counselor to the Deputy Secretary of Labor.

Prior to federal service, Mr. Geale had six years of experience in labor and employment matters, general commercial litigation and alternative dispute resolution in private and public practice, including serving as Assistant General Counsel for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

Mr. Geale graduated from Georgetown Law in 1999 and Claremont McKenna College in 1996.
